Lisbon Portugal

Architectural Cornucopia on the Coast

Lisbon's position on seven low hills beside the river Tagus on the Atlantic coast once lured traders and settlers, and it's still a stunning city. Add to that its cultural diversity, relaxed feel and architectural cornucopia, and you have one of the most enjoyable cities in Europe.

At Lisbon's heart are wide, tree-lined avenues graced by Art Nouveau buildings, mosaic pavements and street cafes. Seen from the river, one of the city's many great viewpoints, Lisbon is an impressiive picture of low-rise ochre and pastel, punctuated by church steeples and domes.

Lisbon is a vibrant city and as well as the plethora of architectural styles, museums and art galleries to visit, there are plenty of areas to discover on foot like the Bairro Alto where the nightlife is bustling and where you might still hear a traditional fado, Portugal's national song. By far the trendiest area in which to see and be seen though is the Chiado, where you will find cafés, restaurants, galleries and bookshops a plenty and some wonderful examples of 18th century religious architecture.

We would recommend a visit here at most times of the year, but remember that the winter months can be cool and wet. The summer is generally hot and dry, but kept shy of the searingly hot temperatures of other areas by the cool breezes coming off the Atlantic coast.
